MMA: Smolka dethrones Cali at PXC 41
By: Robert "Blaze" Belen
Still unbeaten and now new PXC flyweight king, Louis “Da Last Samurai” Smolka, imposed his superb MMA skills as he dethroned and dominated former champ Ale "Young Gun" Cali via second round TKO at the sold out PXC 41 card in Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The 5’9 pride of Hawaii was too skilled and too strong against the former champ. His accurate punches, take downs, constant pressure and continuous ground-and-pound were too much for Cali to handle.
The fight started as expected with Smolka chasing the smaller Cali in an attempt to maximize his physical advantages by throwing powerful punches and taking the fight to the ground, but the agile Cali stood his ground and threw his own bombs.
The defending champ showed his brilliance and tried to sustain the pace in the second round, which started pretty much the same as the first, until the inevitable happened when Smolka finally took down Cali who took to his guard. Smolka then unleashed a flurry of punches while on top of Cali that prompted the referee to stop the fight after several punches landed cleanly on the head, nabbing him the PXC Flyweight belt.
Smolka thanked his team and supporters during the post-fight interview, and hoped that the PXC gives him another big name for his first title defense, which is tentatively slated around March or April next year.
The defeated, but gracious former champion Cali thanked all his fans for their continuous support and promised to come back stronger and reclaim his title.
In the co-main event, the "Korean Invasion" continued as Han Bin Park of Buncheon Blue Dragon Gym of South Korea submitted former PXC Bantamweight champ Crisanto Pitpitunge via rear naked choked at the third round of their scheduled 3-round fight. The fight was pretty close for the first 2 rounds, then on the 3rd, a flying knee by the Korean stunned Pitpitunge who was then taken down and eventually submitted by Park.
History was also made at PXC 41 as Gina Iniong of Team Lakay dominated and TKOed Nathalie Heidel of Malaysia in the very 1st round of the first ever female MMA fight in the Philippines. The crowd favorite Iniong kept the action fast-paced and stunned Heidel with her blinding speed. Iniong sunk in a tight head lock on Heidel as she continued throwing punches to the head which forced the referee stop the fight.
